Suspended sentence for driver after 14-mile chase
Not everyone we defend is innocent of the crime they have been summoned for. However, everyone is entitled to be defended in court and in many cases mitigating circumstances can mean a second chance for some people. In a recent case at Caernarfon Crown Court Chris Sweetman defended a 20 year old man who chased a young couple at speeds of over 70 miles an hour, leaving one of them frightened and in tears.
The defendant was advised to plead guilty to the charge of dangerous driving. However, after hearing the evidence the judge decided that a suspended sentance was sufficient. Judge John Rogers QC told the court: "This was a persistent piece of deliberate dangerous driving." But he added the offence was out of character and the ban would cause great inconvenience, and financial cost, to the defendant who worked for a tyre fitting firm.
Chris was delighted with the outcome adding that "There are no injuries, fortunately, for everyone concerned."
